Remembering Gene Upshaw

Gene Upshaw

Donations in honor of Gene

Gene Upshaw’s accomplishments on the football field and his leadership of the players off the field are well known, but lesser known was his deep commitment to supporting Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland.

Gene was an advocate of Children’s Hospital for over 40 years and was an esteemed member of our board of directors for the past two years. Gene’s efforts on our behalf in Washington D.C helped raise awareness of children’s healthcare, and his advocacy positively affected the health and well-being of our nation’s children.

While a lineman for the Raiders, Gene helped form the Oakland Raider Lineman’s Booster club, the only such lineman group in the NFL, which raised money for Children’s Hospital Oakland. He visited Children's frequently during his Raider days (often accompanied by Raider teammates) brightening the day for many patients.

Our hospital and the community we serve have long benefited from Gene’s support and involvement with Children’s. We are deeply saddened by his passing and we send our heartfelt sympathies to Gene's family and friends.

We are very grateful to Gene’s family for carrying on his generous spirit. In lieu of sending flowers, they have asked that you make a donation to Children’s Hospital Oakland.

If you prefer to mail your memorial gift, please send your check, payable to Children's Hospital & Research Center Foundation, to:
