"Cookies" and How We Use Them
Cookies are packets of information that a website transfers to a user’s computer for record-keeping purposes. They are a means of keeping track of users’ preferences. The use of cookies is standard on the Internet and most Web browsers automatically accept cookies.  A cookie does not tell us who you are, your email address, or any other personal information. We use the information provided by cookies to help us improve the site and our service, and to provide our visitors with a better experience while on the site. You can still use this site if you turn the cookies off.

Donations and Fundraising Events
When you donate online to Children's Hospital or register online for a fundraising event, we ask you to voluntarily provide your name, address, telephone number, email address and credit card number so we can process your donation or event registration, send you a receipt or confirmation, and communicate with you if necessary. If you prefer, you can provide that information by phone or regular mail.

When you make a gift on our site, your information goes into a database maintained by Children's Hospital & Research Center Foundation, the philanthropic arm of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. Each of these service providers is contractually obligated to use these technologies only to provide services to us and in a manner consistent with this privacy statement. Moreover, these vendors may only use data that they may collect on our behalf (or that we otherwise provide to them) in connection with their provision of services to us. With certain service providers, we allow them to use data in an aggregated, anonymous manner to compile statistics about their services and to publish those statistics. For example, our banner advertising service provider can say that it "serves X million impressions each month."

Online Surveys and Contests
From time to time, we may conduct online surveys or contests that help us better understand and serve the needs of our users. Our online surveys/contests may ask you for contact information (such as email address) and demographic information (such as zip code, or age.) We may use contact data from our survey/contest forms to send you information about Children’s. The contact information is also used to contact you if necessary. If you receive email from us and would like to be taken off our list, and receive no emails from us, simply click the link at the bottom of any email to go to email preferences and unsubscribe from any future emails. In some cases, unique identifiers may be collected from website visitors to verify the user's identity. We use this data to help us improve the content and overall performance of our website.

Links to Other Sites
This site has links to other sites we think may be of interest to you. Their purpose is to provide you with convenient access to other websites that might interest you. A link to another site does not imply an endorsement of the site’s content or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of sites not owned by Children’s Hospital & Research Center Foundation. We encourage you to be aware of that when you leave our site and to read privacy statements at any sites that collect personally identifiable data.

Email Contact
When you contact us via email, we answer by sending an email response to you. We also store the email we receive for archival purposes and for our own marketing purposes if we feel that it is consistent with the nature of the inquiry. We will not use return email addresses for any other purpose unless you give us permission to do so.

Note: Please do not email patient health information, as that information is confidential and should only be discussed with your physician.

How We Use Your Information
Children’s Hospital uses the information you provide to fulfill your online request, facilitate customer service, and inform you of our programs and events.

Only Children’s Hospital’s authorized staff and agents have access to personally identifiable information provided by visitors to our site. Please be assured that we never trade, rent, sell, share, or disclose any personal information, including your name, address, or email addresses to outside marketers.

We inform the companies that help Children's Hospital with donations made by credit card that they may not share or use personally identifiable information for any other purpose.

We do not share any third-party or personally identifiable information you provide with gifts in honor or memory of a loved one.

It is possible that we could be forced to disclose personally identifiable user information in response to a search warrant, subpoena, or court order; that can happen to any organization keeping records. Disclosures may also be appropriate to protect our legal rights and the security or integrity of our website, or to avoid liability. Those kinds of disclosures are highly unlikely, but possible.

Children
This website is not intended to nor does it seek to receive information from children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 13. However, information may be collected without requiring the user to disclose his or her age on this website. If you are under the age of thirteen, please do not submit any personally identifiable information via Children’s websites.   For more information about the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), please go to the Federal Trade Commission’s website at: http://www.ftc.gov/privacy/privacyinitiatives/childrens.html.

Policy Changes
We may have collected personal information from you before this Privacy Notice took effect. By using this site, you consent to our continued use of previously collected personal information under these new terms.

Children's Hospital necessarily reserves the right to change this policy from time to time, without advance notice. We will promptly post any changes to our privacy policy on all sites owned by Children’s Hospital.

Deletion and Removal of Information
Non-identifiable information in our aggregate database will not be deleted. Like all responsible website publishers, we maintain backup files as a protection against natural disasters, equipment failures, or other disruptions. Backup files protect you and us because they lower the risk of losing valuable data. Removing a record from our main files does not remove that record from any backup systems. It may take up to six months before all information in a backup record is completely erased through the normal recycling of backup files. In the meantime, as long as backup records exist, they receive the same privacy and security protections as our other records.
