The Campaign to Rebuild Children's Hospital Oakland

As Children’s Hospital approaches its centennial, we are preparing to embark on a plan that will literally rebuild, and in doing so, transform our institution. This plan will not only result in a new, larger state-of-the-art medical center for children, but also creates a stronger and more significant institution for teaching, research and clinical care activities.

The need for a new specialized care hospital

California law requires inpatient areas of hospitals to be rebuilt to a greater seismic safety standard by 2013. Our existing facilities in the Temescal District of North Oakland have served our patients well, but the oldest sections of the hospital were built as early as 1927. The renovation and expansion of our existing facilities to meet the contemporary healthcare standards and state-mandated seismic safeguards is not possible without closing major parts of the hospital for several years.

It is also important for Children’s to be able to meet the future needs of Northern California’s growing population of children. For the past two years, we have studied the demographics and changing pediatric healthcare needs of the greater Bay Area and Northern California. The population of our primary service area (Alameda and Contra Costa counties) is expected to grow by 5.6 percent over the next seven years, while the pediatric population in our secondary service area (Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties) is expected to grow by 11.1 percent over the same period.

With only 171 licensed beds at our current campus, we are simply too small to meet the growing demand for our services. In order to meet the needs of all the children of our region who depend upon our services, we need to expand the capacity of our hospital by 2013.
