Endowing a Family Tradition of Philanthropy

towers couple “Giving back to the community is just what you do. It’s the right thing to do,” says Dottie Towers, explaining how the William M. and Dorothy Wise Towers Endowment came about. Founded by Dottie and her husband Bill, the endowment is a family affair that includes the couple’s six children, 21 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Long-time supporters of Children’s, the Towers set up the endowment to leave a legacy of caring that will extend beyond their lifetimes. “We can support the hospital’s indispensable role in the community,” says Dottie, “and our family shares the satisfaction that directed philanthropy can bring.” In addition to inspiring their family to invest in children’s health each year, they are able to encourage friends to donate to Children’s through their endowment.

The Towers’ endowment is a permanent fund in which the principal investment continues to grow with each additional gift, providing a source of ongoing financial security for Children’s The annual income earned by the fund supports a variety of programs at the hospital. It’s an enduring gift that reflects the Towers’ strong family bonds and deep roots in the community.

“We really see our family endowment as an investment in the future. Children’s has always been a crucial part of our community; not just for Oakland, but for all of Northern California, for all children,” Dottie says. “There is a deep need for expert pediatric healthcare, and we are proud that our family can support Children’s mission.”
