Endowments

A Gift that Grows

An endowment fund provides perpetual support for our pediatric programs and constitutes a permanent declaration of your values. Your grandchildren, great-grandchildren and further generations will encounter their own heritage as they see your family’s endowment benefiting the community.

Unlike other gifts that are used to meet current or capital needs, an endowment is an enduring and forward-looking gift. Its purpose is to support our critical programs over the long haul. It will be kept in perpetuity for as long as Children’s Hospital exists. It is truly a lasting gift.

How it Works

Only the income from the endowment can be spent on an annual basis. The principal is invested to provide both current income and growth. The investment return is used to support programs while the appreciation or growth is left with the principal. The idea is that the buying power of the endowment should always remain the same as when the donor established it. Over time, the investment performance will be able to provide annual income that far exceeds the amount of the donor’s original gift.

How to Create an Endowment

You can create an endowment in several ways. You can do it all at once by making a major gift of cash or marketable assets. Or, you could make all the arrangements now and fund it with a deferred gift, such as a bequest, charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.

You can establish an endowment to create a legacy in your name or to honor a friend, mentor, colleague, or loved one. The funding purpose can be unrestricted, which helps the hospital keep its doors open to sick children from financially disadvantaged families, or restricted to a particular pediatric program.
